Can it really be 20 years since Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle hit theaters? And can it really be celebrated on April 20, aka 4/20 of all days? Yes and yes, and naturally White Castle isn’t letting the anniversary go by without offering new merchandise, deals, and more.
A quick point of clarification, first. The New Line Cinema movie starring John Cho (Harold) and Kal Penn (Kumar) was actually released on July 30, 2004, directed by the late Danny Leiner and written by John Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. In case you missed it the first 20 years around, it focused on the titular stoners trying to go to White Castle to satisfy their munchies… Only to get caught up in an increasingly insane series of misadventures. It’s a classic road trip comedy, only the road trip is a few miles to White Castle instead of cross-country.
“Harold and Kumar’s hijinks leading to their epic journey represents the heroes’ quest, and their passion and dedication to the Crave represents the same love that generations of White Castle fans have shown,” said Jamie Richardson, vice president at White Castle via a press release provided to Guilty Eats. “No matter what calls you to savor the flavor of your favorite Slider, whether at a Castle or in your kitchen, that bite into a 100% beef patty steam-grilled on a bed of onions nestled between two perfectly baked buns is the crave satisfaction you deserve.”
That all out of the way, even with the actual anniversary a few months off, it’s, you know… 4/20. So in honor of that, White Castle is planning a few different events:
Because Harold and Kumar talk a lot about how White Castle is open 24/7, the chain is releasing a promotional code to get a digital version of the movie. All you have to do is purchase a Crave Clutch with 20 sliders between 7 pm and 3 am.
Restaurants will also offer three different Harold & Kumar collectible cups.
If you don’t have a White Castle near you, you can still get in on the action if you buy two packages of White Castle Sliders on one receipt. Upload the receipt, and you’ll get a digital code for the movie.
Last but not least, there are brand new shirts at whitecastle.nadelstore.com that are personalized, so you can proclaim your love for your best bud, just like Harold and Kumar. So there you go! Lots going on in the world of a movie that came out 20 years ago. Now, if there was only some holiday this weekend to celebrate it…
