Trick Play Skittles is an original idea for seasonal candy, for a change

Seasonal snacks and candy are just a reality of our world, but occasionally we get an actual novel idea.

As we transition from passionfruit and s’mores season into pumpkin spice and maple season, food news is full of the arrival of limited time releases with special fall-inspired flavors — mostly variations of the aforementioned pumpkin spice. But one candy brand actually caught our eye with something different, something special: Skittles Trick Plays. (Trick Play Skittles?)

Skittles is an official sponsor of the NFL and to celebrate the return of football season, specifically, Trick Plays Skittles are hitting shelves. So what is a trick play candy? Why, it’s when the Skittles’ colors don’t match the flavors. A trick, you see, like trick plays in football when a team uses deception of some kind to fool their opponent.

According to Delish:

"For instance, a Skittle could be pink or green, but taste like a completely different color candy. “It’s a fun twist on football strategy,” spokesperson Ashley Incarnato told Delish. “We wanted to do something fun that engaged fans this season as an extension of this partnership.”"

Trick Play Skittles have already spotted at Walgreens and will likely appear in other grocery, convenience and drug stores in the coming days.

While it may not be a new flavor, Trick Play Skittles are certainly an interesting spin on the seasonal trend. And perhaps this is a lesson: Sometimes you don’t need to be new, just different. And maybe a little confusing.

Of course, it’s hard not to think about Skittles and the NFL without thinking of Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch very well-documented love of the candy. (He once visited Houston, Scotland in advance of the Super Bowl with Skittles in tow.)
