SXSW debate: Are Torchy’s Tacos any good?
By Sandy C.
When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez asked for taco recommendations on Twitter while at Austin’s SXSW, we all found ourselves asking if Torchy’s Tacos are any good.
U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York was one of the featured speakers at this year’s SXSW in Austin. When she arrived at the city, she came with a taco craving! Ocasio-Cortez took to her Twitter to ask for taco recommendations (see the tweet below). Over all, there were many tasty suggestions and you bet we took notes to try some of them out for ourselves! But one tweet started a debate: How good (or bad) are Torchy’s Tacos?
Those who have never been to a Torchy’s Tacos fast food restaurant are probably the most confused and curious about why some people are so against it (or for it).

As someone who has been to Torchy’s Tacos before, I have to say I don’t think you’re missing out on anything special. While the tacos aren’t bad, they don’t merit a recommendation and are certainly not “tex-mex” at all.
To put it simply, the restaurants tacos are forgettable. And with many locations across four states, there’s also nothing unique or Austin-authentic about Torchy’s Tacos if that is what you’re aiming for.

If you’re still in the Austin area and searching for a good place to eat, some of the other recommendations to Ocasio-Cortez include Juan in a Million (good food and quick service, especially since the busiest SXSW weekend is over) and Rosita’s al Pastor (never been, but on my list to try).
What’s your favorite place to eat in Austin? Any great taco suggestions? Let us know in the comments and we’ll definitely stop by next time we’re in town.
