Starbucks decides to revamp their rewards loyalty program and now we have more star options

Starbucks is once again modifying their rewards loyalty program and customers may end up liking this revamp compared to previous changes.

On March 19, Starbucks made an announcement about their loyalty program that will have many loyal customers sitting up and taking notice. In both a press release and an email sent out to members of the rewards program (I know I got the email), the company explained that they were making some changes to the way customers can redeem the stars they earn on purchases.

When we head to Starbucks to pick up our favorite drinks and snacks, we are going to have more flexibility in terms of how we spend our stars. In the past, we would need to earn 150 stars to become a gold member (and earn our first reward), and then for every 125 stars we would get a free drink or food item of our choice. However, things are about to change, and for some of us this could be a great thing.

The change will take effect on April 16, and while we still earn 2 stars for every dollar we spend, it is the way we redeem the stars that is being revamped. On top of changing how we spend stars, Starbucks said that, “all members will be able to earn and redeem Stars for Rewards immediately after joining the program, bringing instant value to its growing fanbase.”

According to the company, the way stars can be redeemed has changed to allow people to use stars in a number of ways now. And this includes having a number of levels of star redemption.

You can spend 25 stars to customize a drink, which includes adding more of a favorite syrup, getting an extra shot of espresso, and even substituting your dairy. Spending 50 stars will get you a bakery item, hot tea, or even a cup of hot coffee. When you spend 150 stars, you can get a parfait, a hot breakfast, or a handcrafted drink. If you have 200 stars to spend, you can get yourself a salad, a protein box, or even a lunch sandwich. And finally if you can handle not spending all those waiting stars, 400 stars can get you certain merchandise or even the at-home coffee.

At this point, the new program changes mean having a lot more options when it comes to being rewarded. Other benefits of the program, such as the free birthday reward, the bonus points that can be earned, and free refills on hot coffee and tea will remain the same.

Honestly, I am excited for the update to the loyalty program as it feels like we will be able to have a lot more reward options and if you only want a cup of tea you won’t feel guilty about using a reward because your usual drink is more expensive. Even being able to spend stars on espresso shots is an awesome bonus when you need a caffeine boost, but maybe don’t have enough on your gift card.
