This week’s Chopped preview: Dessert for dinner

Chopped Season 40, Episode 67 is all about ice cream! But every contestant on the show prepares three dishes, not just one — and only one of those involves dessert.

When you think of summer, ice cream is probably one of the first things that comes to mind. (Unless you’re already thinking about ice cream, and if you are, we salute you.)

Whether it’s permanently lodged into your childhood memories accompanied by that infamous ice cream truck music — it’s in your head now too, isn’t it? Not sorry — or you can taste it just by hearing its name, ice cream is in some way a part of all of us. I have countless memories of walking to the local Dairy Queen with my friends as a kid and always ordering a hot fudge sundae even in 90-degree weather.

However you enjoy it, you’ve probably never imagined trying to cook with it. You’ve scooped it into a bowl and showered it with toppings and you’ve plopped it onto your apple pie, but has it ever been a key ingredient in your dinner prep?

This week’s Chopped episode, “Team Ice Cream,” four chefs will have to figure out how to make ice cream a part of every meal — not just dessert.

According to the episode synopsis:

"“Four chefs set out to prove that ice cream can work well in two savory courses. A scoop is sandwiched in the middle of an indulgent ingredient in the first basket. Then a unique ice cream flavor at the center of an unusual dish is the big surprise.”"

Challenging chefs to cook delicious meals with ingredients that don’t traditionally go together is what Chopped does best. When it comes to dessert, you really can find a way to have it with anything — as long as you’re willing to accept the risk.
