This week’s Chopped preview: Let’s get creative

This week’s brand-new episode of Chopped Season 40, Episode 69  isn’t going to let any of its contestants stay comfortable. There’s no better way to challenge a chef than to present them with ingredients that just shouldn’t mix.

The best chefs in the world are also the most creative. When faced with a culinary challenge like no other, they hold onto their knives and don’t hesitate to turn any ingredient into something delicious.

This week’s upcoming Chopped episode, “Holy Bologna!” is set to be a wild mashup of ingredients and dishes — and no, processed meat has nothing to do with it (probably).

According to the episode synopsis:

"Four chefs are forced to get creative from the start when they find a kitschy, oddball cake and an unusual hybrid veggie in their appetizer baskets. An offal surprise and a fun fungus dish keep things interesting in round two. In the final round, an ice cream mishap leaves one of the chefs scrambling to put a key lime dessert together."

When it comes to weird ingredients, nothing fits the list better than a hybrid food. It’s hard enough to get creative with kale. What if it’s a cross between kale and broccoli? Challenge … accepted?

Hybrid fruits are a lot more common than vegetables — you’ve probably seen or at least heard of a tangelo (a grapefruit tangerine hybrid). But when it comes to unusual hybrid foods, the veggies definitely win. Some examples we could see in this week’s baskets:

  • Kalette (a cross between kale and Brussels sprouts)
  • Broccoflower (Romanesco broccoli), in case you ever needed broccoli and cauliflower in the same bite
  • Brokali — can you guess? Broccoli and kale do belong together!
  • Rabbages have to live with their terrible name, but if you didn’t think a cabbage and a radish could combine, you were wrong.

Will this week’s judges go easy on the show’s contestants? Not likely!
