This week’s Chopped preview: All on the grill

This week’s brand-new episode of Chopped Season 40, Episode 72 is all happening on the grill. Who will be the last chef standing?

Chopped is known for its creativity when it comes to cooking challenges. Most of the time chefs are free to use whatever equipment they want or need to get the job done.

Sometimes, though, you have to mix things up. Which is why this week’s upcoming episode of Chopped, “Grills On! Game On!”, forces its contestants to step away from their fryers and ovens and fire up everyone’s go-to summer cooking appliance.

You may have never considered the variety of things you can actually cook on the grill, if you’re willing to get creative with your technique. It’s more than just steaks, burgers, and fish, though these are all wonderful entrees to liven up any summer evening. You can grill fruits, vegetables, cheese, and even bread.

Wait. Does that mean you can actually make a grilled cheese sandwich on the grill? YES YOU CAN. Grilled grilled cheese exists. You’re welcome.

Just because you’ve grilled before doesn’t mean you’re a master at grilling everything. This week’s chefs are up for some seriously heated competition.

According to the episode synopsis:

"“When the ovens and fryers are turned off, four chefs have no choice but to get their grill on! A rare meat hits the heat in round one, and a frozen food favorite in the second basket might not thrill the competitors. The final two grillers must contend with double-smoked bacon in the dessert basket, and each chef tries to smoke the other in this fiery contest.”"

Of all the frozen food favorites we can think of, pizza is the first to come to mind — because honestly when are we not thinking about pizza. But can you grill a frozen pizza? Yes, you can! Be warned though. It’s said that once you go grilled, you’ll never go back.

According to Meghan Splawn over at Kitchn, cooking pizza on the high heat of a grill results in extra crispy crust and caramelized cheese — if you’ve ever unintentionally undercooked a frozen pizza in the oven, you can imagine this is, as Splawn puts it, “a total game-changer.”

This week’s competition will have you itching to fire up your own grill and create your own unique meal. Get ready!
