McDonald’s is king of the fast food world
By Kareem Gantt
McDonald’s has reclaimed its rightful place as king of the fast food Gods! Well, at least for now.
Maybe McDonald’s was tired of hearing all about how Chick-fil-A was the cream of the crop when it comes to fast food giants, because they took that and clawed their way back to the top. Here’s what’s going on.
According to Fox Business News, the legacy fast food giant reclaimed its place as the king of the fast food world, hitting the $40 billion sales mark in 2018. That figure was a whopping $20 billion more than its competitors, making it known that Ronald McDonald was back at full strength.
McDonald’s closest competitor was Starbucks, which racked up $19.7 billion in sales and continues to be the world’s leading coffee chain. While looking at the rankings, one chain shocked me by joining the top five, Subway, whose $10.4 billion represented a major comeback for a chain that seemed to be on life support.

Another chain that caught our eye is Chick-fil-A, who slid to number five making $10 billion in sales in 2018. One has to question if the chicken chain was losing its touch, especially in the face of Popeye’s Chicken Sandwich becoming one of the marketing gems of our time?
Clearly the answer is no, despite the chain’s stunning ranking.
For all other metrics, Chick-fil-A is still among the top dogs in the fast-food world, and it would take a monumental feat to knock them off their perch. This is where McDonald’s comes back into focus, as they’re the only chain (as of now) that has the resources and gusto to knock Chick-fil-A down a peg.
It showed in the rankings that it could not only trounce the chicken giant in sales but push it down to the point where many would question if its rapid rise was too fast?
That’s why McDonald’s reclaiming its throne at the top of the sales pyramid was so important, and it should mark the beginning of a true fast-food war. May the best chain win.
