If you want an easy dessert you can make at home, regardless of your egg and dairy supply, then give Wacky Cake a try! It’s easy and fun to make!

Wacky Cake might be more famously known by some as Depression Cake or War Cake, as its recipe was born during the scarcity of the Great Depression itself and wartime rationing. It’s basically a poor man’s cake that calls for none of the classic milk and egg ingredients that are typically in a classic (any) cake recipe.

Right now, during these tough times, we might not be able to get to the store all the time, so here we are back to some Wacky Cake days ahead of us! Let’s check out what exactly it is, and how to make it!

Here are the traditional ingredients that are used in a Chocolate Wacky Cake: all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, some sort of veggie-based oil, and vinegar. This is for the basic Chocolate version of this cake at hand here.

A recipe that I found, courtesy of Delish, takes it yet one step even further, and completely eliminates the need for all-purpose flour and gives you an easy tip on making some of your own oat flour.

Basically, if you’ve got some spare oats or a bunch of oatmeal packets that won’t get used or eaten, this is their time to truly shine through. All you need is oats or oatmeal packets and a blender/food-processor (yes, that’s it). Few seconds later, boom! You’ve got yourself some of your very own oat flour.

Also, if you don’t have nut allergies in your house, you can do the same thing with almonds as well (I did it for myself once, and boy it was some delicious flour AND baked very very well surprisingly more than I truly thought that it would).

If you read Delish’s story and take on Wacky Cake, then you will see some other tips and comparisons on what’s best to use for something like this. Definitely check it out for additional and even more crazy info!

Here’s some facts and general info on Delish’s take on Wacky Cake:

  • Yields 9 serving(s)
  • Takes only 15 minutes to prep-time
  • Takes (total time with prepping and cooking) just 1 hour and 15 minutes (so not too bad)
