Walmart announces that they will be closed for Thanksgiving 2020
Walmart will be closed on Thanksgiving this year
On July 21, Walmart made what some might consider a shocking (yet pretty epic) announcement. For Thanksgiving this year, they will not be opening their doors.
According to CNET.com, the decision to close Walmart for Thanksgiving 2020 is one that ends a years long tradition of early Black Friday sales. The CEO and president of Walmart, John Furner, issued a statement about the decision saying, “We know this has been a trying year, and our associates have stepped up. We hope they will enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones.”
This closure also extends to Sam’s Club, the warehouse retailer owned by Walmart.
Walmart made a big announcement on July 21
On top of revealing that they will be closed for Thanksgiving this year, they also announced bonuses that will be paid out to their employees in the month of August. The bonuses are part of a third round of payments being given to employees who have stepped up during the pandemic. Employees will receive between $150 and $300 on top of their usual take home pay.
According to the release from the company, while they may be closed on Thanksgiving, they will be operating their usual hours on the Wednesday before the holiday. They will also be taking advantage of online sales, offering customers a chance to get early Black Friday deals via their website.
At this point, they have not announced their Black Friday hours, however, those will likely be shared closer to November. Either way, it sounds like Walmart is doing their part to look out for their employees in some small way.
While it may seem a bit surprising to hear that the store will be keeping their doors closed on Thanksgiving, I think this news is actually pretty amazing. And we are all for allowing people to spend time with their loved ones, especially after the year this has been.
