Taco Bell and Burger King are giving the drive-thru a makeover

Both Taco Bell and Burger King are getting ready to unveil new ways of thinking about the drive-thru and digital ordering.

As everyone is well aware, COVID-19 has upended almost every aspect of life. The way we do just about everything in our lives has been affected in some way or another. In particular is has dramatically changed the way we go out to eat.

With some parts of the country just now beginning to allow indoor dining in some capacity, for months we have had to go through drive-thus or pick up our meals curbside. Ordering via apps on our phones has become commonplace as we all have been forced to adapt to a new normal.

Well, two fast food chains, Taco Bell and Burger King, have decided to embrace this new reality and use it as an opportunity to try something kind of exciting and new. Both chains are reimagining what a fast food drive-thru can be and how we interact with it.

Taco Bell and Burger King have big plans.

More from Fast Food

As reported by QSR Magazine.com, Taco Bell plans include eliminating dine-in eating altogether as well as adding a drive-thru lane specifically for people who order via the Taco Bell app.

In addition, they will start using “bellhops” who will interact with customers who use a more traditional version of the drive-thru via a tablet and place orders that way. It will also include curbside pickup and increased kitchen integration with the app.

As for Burger King, Fast Company reports they also plan to eliminate the dining area but unlike Taco Bell, you will still be able to eat your Whopper on the premises. However, instead of a booth, you will be able to walk up or park your car under a solar roof and have your meal brought to you.

Any way you look at it, fast food and the way we consume it is changing. Revenue through the drive-thru was already on the rise before the pandemic and it has only accelerated since then. While Burger King is still years away from implementing these new ideas, Taco Bell could have its first new concept store open in a few months.

What do you think? Would a drive-thru experience like this be something you would enjoy? Or are you a more traditional, sit down and enjoy your meal kind of person? Either way, change is coming, regardless of when life finally goes back to the way we all remember it.
