After already closing several stores, Starbucks is set to close 100 additional U.S. locations
Delish is reporting that Starbucks is going to be closing 100 stores soon as it shifts “its portfolio to reflect changing consumer habits.” Here is what this means and why it’s happening.
After a company meeting that went over recent earnings, Starbucks has decided to close about 100 locations in the U.S. and another 100 in Canada. This is not a small number and will be happening throughout 2021. Is the pandemic to blame or another factor?
Earlier this year, we learned that about 400 stores would be closing, are people no longer in need of a caffeine fix, or what’s going on? Here’s what we know as the source shares.
Why is Starbucks closing more locations?
There seems to be a significant shift in customer needs. There are more people in drive-thrus and not as spread out as before. Instead, it appears coffee lovers are sticking to their favorite locations and suburbs.

That said, some of these locations are only closing to develop a “more efficient retail store.” This sounds to me like we can expect to see more drive-thru-only Starbucks locations. It’s also possible that more will be built in high-demand areas.
How close to you is your favorite Starbucks? After the pandemic, do you find yourself traveling to several locations or sticking to your nearest or favorite one? With more people staying at home, I suppose it makes sense to go to the nearest one and not venture out. Not to mention, I’m sure to-go orders and delivery are more popular.
What is your opinion on this? Many only see how this will hurt people in general as it means fewer jobs.
