Everyone has this conversation at some point: What would be your last meal if you were on death row? While that may be a bit morbid to some, it’s a valid question. What meal is so good that you would want it to be the last thing you ever eat? For me, the answer has been the same for almost a decade, a Five Guys bacon cheeseburger with extra mayo, lettuce, and onions.
The burgers they make at Five Guys are the best ones you will EVER put in your mouth. Period. Don’t even argue with me because you are wrong.
For those who might not be blessed to live near one of their over 1,500 locations, Five Guys is a fast casual chain that focuses on burgers and fries. And that’s it. Yes, they have hot dogs and a veggie burger, but if you go to Five Guys and don’t get a real burger, then you are wasting your time as well as theirs.
Five Guys launched in 1986, founded by Jerry Murrell and his wife as well as their four sons. Hence the name. By the early 2000s the company began franchising and locations began to appear all over the globe, from England to Qatar to Spain to Ireland.
It’s not just the cheeseburgers that make Five Guys special

So what makes a Five Guys burger so good? First is the fact they are fresh made when you walk in the door. These aren’t frozen patties that have been sitting around all day in a bin.
They hit the grill only when you order one. Then there are the toppings. They have a considerable list of 15 free toppings you can mix and match to form any combination you can think of.
Do you like mustard and cooked onions? Done. Extra mayo and tomatoes? Not a problem. Are ketchup, lettuce, and pickles your thing? All you have to do is ask.
Then, there are the fries. Every Five Guys you walk into tells you exactly what local farm their potatoes came from. They are cut on premises and then fried to a golden brown and salted to perfection. But the best part about the fries?
After they put your order in the bag they dump another helping right on top. So after you finish eating there is still a mound of fries sitting in your bag, waiting for you.
How freakin’ cool is that?
Wash all that down with an amazing handspun milkshake and you have all the makings of one of the best meals you will ever have.
I first discovered Five Guys a decade ago and have almost never walked away disappointed. And the one time I did I reached out and the manager of that location contacted me to see if he could make things right. That is just one of the reasons I eat at Five Guys at least once every couple of weeks. If I go longer than that I start to get withdrawals and need my fix.
If you’ve never been to Five Guys, National Hamburger Day is all the reason you’ll need. Take my word for it, you won’t be sorry.
