Going into Week 7 of Buddy vs Duff 3, cake masters Duff Goldman and Buddy Valastro were in a dead heat. The score was tied and whoever could take the lead going into the season finale would have a serious advantage to become, once and for all, the King of Cake.

However, things didn’t quite work out that way. If you were the suspicious type you may have been screaming “Shenanigans!” at your television after the episode ended. It got us thinking that it was very reminiscent of what happened going into the Final Four of Tournament of Champions 2.

Regardless, once again the cake masters made some incredible cakes, and while the final outcome may not have reflected it, to us there was a clear winner. But before we get to that let’s talk about the cakes themselves.

For Week 7 the theme was architectural wonders, which immediately gets you thinking about some of the great buildings that have been built throughout history. The Empire State Building. The Tower of Pisa. The Coliseum in Rome.

For Week 7 of Buddy vs Duff 3, the bakers went in very different directions.

Buddy decided to go big for his cake. Really big. He recreated the Valley of the Kings in cake form. The monstrous cake included several pyramids and a Sphinx that was almost entirely made of cake. It was the definition of go big or go home and included some of the most detailed work Buddy and his crew have done yet.

While Buddy created cake greatness, Duff went in a completely different direction and made … a treehouse.

Yes, a treehouse. Now I understand that Duff just welcomed his first child into the world and yes, a treehouse can indeed be an architectural wonder, but if we’re being honest, nobody really thinks that this is what was meant when they picked the theme.

More from Food TV

Sure, it was an amazing treehouse. Stupendous even. The fact they created the whole thing using cake and the height they managed to pull off was a testament to the crazy skills of Team Duff. However, when you look at the cake and compare it to what Buddy made and consider the theme, did Duff take the easy way out?

If you had asked us before judging began we would have put good money on Buddy winning. His cake was just more impressive on every level. However, that didn’t turn out to be the case. In what can only be called a shocker, the two bakers finished with the exact same score. Which means that both Buddy and Duff go into the finale each with a score of 1600.

Now, as when Antonia Lofaso and Jet Tila tied during Tournament of Champions 2, we really feel like when you do the math, the odds of a tie happening is pretty slim to impossible. Did Food Network tweak things to up the drama in what has turned out to be a pretty drama-free season? No one knows, but honestly, we wouldn’t put it past them.

Anyway, next week sees the season finale of Buddy vs Duff 3 and the crowning of the King of Cake. Will this be the final time we see these two do battle? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
