Sometimes the boring old standbys are just that…boring. Sometimes you want something that offers variety to the same old boring routine. And hey…I love McDonald’s and Burger King as much as the next guy, but sometimes you just want change. Enter Whataburger. We’ve decided to showcase the 10 greatest Whataburger menu items of all-time.
Whataburger was founded in 1950 and although the menu items have changed, they too have their old standbys that just thankfully won’t go away. The list is diverse and there’s something for everyone.
If you haven’t been lately, this one’s likely to stir up a craving for sure. Here are 10 of the greatest Whataburger menu items of all-time. Don’t say we didn’t warn you
10. Cinnamon Roll
What an odd thing to start off with, right? I mean we are talking about a Burger chain and one of the best and biggest out there. But don’t knock it until you try it. And besides, who says that Dunkin’ Donuts and Tim Horton’s are the only places to stop for coffee and something sweet?
This one here goes pretty well with some freshly made Whataburger coffee, and the bun is sticky and gooey and delicious to the last piece. You’ll be going back to the counter for more if you plan on sitting for a while.
9. Whataburger
A list like this wouldn’t be the same without this classic. In the end the classics on the menus at restaurants like these are what make their legacies last. And 71 years of feeding its clientele these tasty treats is quite the legacy indeed.
8. Whatacatch Sandwich
Hey…you’ve gotta have a fish sandwich. Most fast food restaurants do, and this one here doesn’t disappoint. Sometimes you just don’t feel like meat and when a fish stick sandwich and cheese whiz at home doesn’t cut it, this one will hit the spot for sure.
7. Cobb Salad
Okay…salad?! I know, but Cobb Salad is so multi-layered. If it isn’t the eggs, then it’s the bacon and the croutons. This is a menu item I particularly like to order at many restaurants I stop at, because you get your protein, your veggies, and great taste all in one.
6. Whatachickn’ Strips
And like the fish sandwich, a fast food joint just isn’t a fast food joint without a chicken strip or chicken nugget selection. These strips are delicious and paired with fries, you have quite the finger-licking treat and a top contender in the epic finger foods category. It’s a mess to eat, yes, but an oh-so-satisfying one.
When the craving for chicken strips gets you…it’s hard to push that one away. There’s only one course of action when it happens: Get yourself to Whataburger if you can.
5. Avocado Bacon Burger
It’s all in the name of this one, really. Avocado and bacon go together like the greatest of tag team wrestlers. Pardon the wrestling analogy, as I also cover pro wrestling with my writings, but bear with me.
If you’ve ever seen a wrestling match and see a tag team working perfectly in tandem in the ring, almost as if they know what the other is thinking, and the end result is the perfect blend of athleticism and interpretive dance.
Well, that’s what you have when Avocado and crispy bacon collide…music, art, an epic performance piece overall, and if you throw a Whataburger patty into the mix…well, you’ve got yourself something magical indeed.
4. Shakes & Malts
This list would not have been complete without Whataburger’s shakes and malts. In all honesty I’m going to go out on a limb and boldly state that their shakes are better than any other chain out there.
There’s something in them that transports me back to 1950s era diners… “Mr. Sandman” by The Chordettes is playing on the loudspeaker and greasers getting rowdy in the corner. Forgive my nostalgia for simpler times, folks. But I do get transported to that era when having one of these; the strawberry is particularly divine.
3. Grilled Chicken Sandwich
Now the Cobb Salad had bacon in it and the dressing is a tad over the top as far as calories are concerned, so technically it can’t be considered the healthiest. Healthy, sure, but still….
Now if you’re looking to stay on top of the diet, this one paired with a nice packet of apple slices that they offer, you can accomplish something that seems impossible most days: Staying on that diet.
2. Breakfast Platter
I can eat breakfast for dinner every night of the week. If it isn’t the plethora of sausages and meat patties…omelet options, pancakes, French toast, heck even baked beans.
Breakfast offers a wide-variety of taste, and really, it just brings me back to lazy Sundays when my dad had the odd day off and my mom would cook us all a brunch consisting of all of these—in large supply. My dad and I would watch the Italian soccer games and smell the aroma of a large cooking breakfast coming from upstairs.
The breakfast platter at Whataburger may seem simple on the surface but it hits the spot and like so many other epic breakfast menu items out there, it takes me back to those late Sunday mornings of my childhood.
1. Whataburger Patty Melt
You can get a plain old burger on a bun at any fast food restaurant chain. At Whataburger, this option makes you feel like you’re eating a burger at home, and quite the tasty one at that. The toasted sliced loaf bread adds a texture you don’t usually get with your regular variety burger bun, and yes even brioche…sometimes that too can get a tad boring I’m afraid.
There’s nothing boring about this one and it gives a good dose of what a lot of these other menu items on this list also give, and that’s variety from the same old that you can find out there on any given day.
You get two beef patties here and it’s that Monterey Jack Cheese paired with that creamy pepper sauce that also takes this bad boy over the edge to that place I like to call mind-numbing flavor tones. It’ll have you walking like a zombie all day long, mumbling 2 words like zombies mumble the word “brain!” Only you’ll be saying—really droning it out: “Patty melt…”
