We are down to just five cooks left in The Great American Recipe kitchen and that means that it is about time to “Mix It Up.”

But what does this mean? It means that in the first challenge of the night, our Great American Recipe cheftestants are going to have to swap recipes with each other and try to create one of their fellow cook’s dishes. It is bound to be an interesting experience for all involved.

Then in the second round, the five cooks will have to create their own “original fusion dish” that will represent their story as an American. It is another chance to impress the judges with their ability to tell a story through their food.

The Great American Recipe is here to “Mix It Up” in episode 6

With just five cooks left, this recipe swap is bound to be interesting. So which cooks stood out for us in this first round of the competition?

Up first, Foo’s take on Nikki’s Tuscan Chicken with Roasted Cauliflower was definitely a dish we would want to try. It also helps that he enjoys making Italian dishes too. Then there was Dan, who got Silvia’s Turkey Empanadas. And while he admits that he is better at eating Latin cuisines than he is making it, he still seemed ready to take on something new, even with some issues at his station. And our honorable mention has to go to Nikki, who had to take on the challenge of a pumpkin bread courtesy of Robin.

But who stood out for the judges? It was Robin (who had Foo’s recipe) and Nikki (with Robin’s recipe).

Now it was on to the second round, where our cooks have to create a fusion dish featuring different cuisines that tell their story.

So who caught our eye this time? Nikki definitely caught our attention with her Shrimp Curry, which was a fusion of different curry flavors. And the other cook who has our attention is Foo, with his Chinese Southwestern Ribs with Mexican Elote. (He had us at ribs!)

And after a walk around by the judges, there was a lot to look forward to when it came time for the final tasting.

So who hit the high notes with the judges? That would be Foo and Robin. But who won the day? The winner this time around was Foo!

And which cooks maybe faltered a little? Nikki and Dan were the least successful in terms of creating their fusion dishes.

So who went home this week? Sadly, the cook who went home this week was Nikki.
