Without the Friendly’s Wattamelon Rolls summer isn’t the same
When it comes to delicious treats, in particular ice creams, shakes, and sherbets, Friendly’s is the place to be, especially in the summer. With classic sundaes, decadent milkshakes, and a variety of ice cream cakes and rolls, they have long been the place to go in summer (and really all year long) for the perfect desserts or sweet treats.
But in 2021, sad news broke that Friendly’s would no longer be producing not only their iconic Jubilee Rolls, but actually all of their ice cream rolls. And this meant that there would no longer be any Wattamelon Rolls!
The problem is that for many of us, the Wattamelon Roll has been on of the most iconic treats of summer for many years. But according to the report from WWLP about the discontinuation of the ice cream rolls, the Media Relations for Friendly’s explained,
"This may be disappointing news to some of our ice cream fans, but we at Friendly’s are excited to focus on optimizing our broad portfolio of ice cream cartons, novelties, and cakes to best meet the needs of our customers for every occasion or celebration big or small."
Friendly’s eliminated all of their ice cream rolls, including the iconic summer staple – The Wattamelon Roll
Basically, Friendly’s doesn’t feel that the ice cream rolls are in demand with consumers. And yet, all summer long it has seemed like all people have been looking for is the Wattamelon Roll.
In local Facebook groups I am in, people have put up “In Search Of” posts hoping that other locals might have stocked up on this classic roll. Still other posts have bemoaned the fate of this delicious watermelon inspired treat.
Basically, it just isn’t summer without a classic Wattamelon Roll and its “refreshing watermelon and lemon sherbet with rich chocolate chip seeds.”
We still can’t get over the loss of this ice cream (technically sherbet) roll. And with the end of National Ice Cream Month (July), we can’t help but feel it is only right to mourn this iconic treat that was once a major part of our summer traditions.
