Halloween Baking Championship season 8 was back for episode 4 and this week, it was all about moldy desserts and creations you can smash.

It all started with the Thriller Challenge. The remaining bakers were tasked with making a dessert that looked like moldy, decaying food. But on top of that, they had to include a fermented ingredient. This included kombucha, soy sauce, pickled strawberries, miso, sauerkraut, kefir, balsamic vinegar, and yogurt.

The bakers made truly revolting-looking desserts. There was a rotting Caesar salad, moldy pancakes, very old Chinese takeout, moldy spaghetti, and a green moldy-looking apple pie. But while the outsides (and sometimes the insides) looked gross, the desserts tasted delicious.

But one dessert came out on top and that was Maricsa’s wilted Caesar salad cherry baklava almond cake. It looked disgusting but according to the judges, it was very tasty.

On to the Killer challenge! This time, the bakers had to make a smashable dessert. They could make whatever gross-looking dessert they wanted but it had to have some kind of covering that the judges could break through.

Lots of bakers made brains and blood but others made desserts that looked like flesh-eating plants, maggots, eyeballs, and earthworms. But someone had to make the grossest and most delicious dessert and this week it was Alexey!

He made a raspberry mint gelee and a red velvet brain cake with blood orange grubs and a white chocolate sphere over it all. The white chocolate was so thin that it cracked perfectly when the judges broke into it.

Unfortunately, someone also had to go home, and shockingly, it was Maricsa! Her smashable dessert didn’t smash at all and her choux pastry was undercooked. Considering how well she did in the Thriller challenge, it was surprising to see her leave in this round.

Next week, Halloween Baking Championship is really getting gross by having the bakers make open-wound cakes. From the preview alone, it’s going to be super gross so if you have a weak stomach, this might not be the episode for you.
