The Great British Baking Show was back for episode 7 of season 13 and it was all about custard this week. For better or for worse, the bakers had to make many different kinds of custard over three challenges. The results ranged wildly from too loose custard to custard you could bounce a quarter off of.

It all started with the Signature Challenge. The bakers were tasked with making floating islands which is soft meringue that floats on to creme anglaise. The bakers could choose whatever flavors they wanted, they just had to follow the basic idea. Most of them did really well. There were only a few that included too many flavors or had their meringue deflate. Overall, not bad.

Next was the Technical challenge! This challenge was chosen by Prue and she tasked the bakers with making ice cream cones and pistachio ice cream. Is this baking? That’s up for debate. But whatever it is, only two bakers did really well and those two were Sandro and Maxy. Their ice cream wasn’t melting when it was brought to the judges. Sandro took the number one spot!

On to the Showstopper Challenge! The bakers had to make a layered custard gateau. There had to be cake and there had to be set custard. It was not an easy task.

And the results were a bit shocking. Janusz, who has been at the top of the pack for most of the season, made a tasteless cake. Kevin also had issues stacking his cakes and ended up putting his cakes on different plates.

That being said, some of the results were not so shocking. Syabira has been making amazing bakes for most of the season and it was no surprise that she was awarded Star Baker for the second week in a row.

It also wasn’t too shocking that Kevin was the one who was sent home. He had issues with all the challenges this week.

Next week, it’s Pastry Week and with only five bakers left, the competition is only going to get harder.
