NEW YORK, NY – APRIL 12: In this photo illustration, a meatless ‘Impossible Slider’ sits on a table at a White Castle restaurant, April 12, 2018 in the Queens borough of New York City. The meatless burgers, which sell for $1.99, are about twice the size of White Castle’s regular sliders. The patties, made primarily of wheat protein and potato, are the first plant-based burgers sold in an American quick-serve restaurant. (Photo illustration by Drew Angerer/Getty Images) /

5. White Castle

Claim to fame: Sliders

The Reason:

There is a certain amount of glee that comes to people when the words “White Castle” are spoken.

While Krystal has made a name for itself in the South, the king of the slider world is indeed White Castle. Believe it or not, this chain is over 97 years old, and it introduced the fast-food world to the art of the “slider,” a mini burger that can be consumed quickly and numerously. Remarkably for a restaurant that’s over 100 years old, White Castle’s quality has never wavered, and you can taste the flavor, and the love, within each slider.

Northerners who have made their way South have been pleading with White Castle to build outlets in their new neck-of-the-woods, thumbing their nose at the southern version of their beloved White Castle. While they have rebuffed that request, you can find those legendary sliders in grocery stores, and that’s a nice consolation prize for the northern transplants.

Best menu item: Sliders

It’s what made the franchise the legend it is today, and the quality hasn’t diminished one bit.

Worst menu item: None

That’s right! White Castle doesn’t have a single bad item on their menu. Not one.
