Grubhub is one of the leading food delivery services and the brand is back again with its 2023 Delivered Report.

If you’re unfamiliar, the Delivered Report is a retrospective look at what was ordered by users and then compiled into some of the biggest food and drink trends of the year. This is something I do for books so I think this is even cooler.

Thankfully, we don’t have to figure this one out as Grubhub was kind enough to share the data with us and it might surprise you. There were some trends that have been long-time favorites that are finally making their mark this year and honestly, it’s been a long time coming.

It wouldn’t be a post wrapping up 2023 without a Taylor Swift reference. At least grant me that one because there is so much data to discuss and talk about so thank you to Grubhub for sharing as some of these trends are amazing.

While the company broke down a few trends, there are a few I want to focus on. If you’re looking to see the full report, you can head to this website and see a full breakdown but there are a few topics I’d like to dive into so let’s break those down.

One of the categories I found most eye-opening was that over 10 million orders for caffeine came in after 5 pm. Maybe it’s due to people’s working hours being changed or the rise of hustle culture but the company shared the 5 most ordered coffee drinks from in 2023. In the top spot was Iced Coffee and this one doesn’t surprise me at all.

No matter where you go, you either see people drinking iced coffees, buying them, or looking to get one. I’ve been guilty of this one so I can’t judge. The #2 spot went to the Caramel Frappe while #3 was the Mocha Frappe. These two were probably due to it being the summertime and people are craving something nice and frosty.

Rounding out the list were cappuccino and hot coffee. While these aren’t that exciting, they’re classic drinks. As someone who isn’t a huge coffee drinker, this list doesn’t surprise me and I’m wondering how we’ll see this trend evolve into the new year.

The other category I thought was interesting was the different types of fries ordered. French fries are the ultimate comfort food and there are so many different options. Due to that, I had to share the top 5 most ordered styles of French Fries in 2023. The first is none other than the Classic cut which is a mainstay at most restaurants including popular fast-food joints such as McDonald’s, Burgers King, and Wendy’s so there’s no way this wouldn’t be #1.

As for the #2 most ordered, that honor goes to Waffle Fries. I’m sure we all know which restaurant is responsible for that while #3 on the list is Cheese Fries. Honestly, that would be my #1 pick because there is something so deliciously decadent about an order of cheese fries.

The #4 spot went to Sweet Potato Fries which surprised the heck of me and then the list was rounded out with Curly Fries. This is such a wide variety of fries and truly encompasses all the different types of fries there are. It’s just so awesome to see all the love for fries this year and no doubt that trend will continue rising.

The other trend worth noting is all the love for pickles in 2023 which Grubhub noted had an 89% increase. That means that almost 7 million pickles were ordered in 2023 alone. As a pickle lover, I’m happy to see that this crunchy delight is making waves. Let’s hope we see more pickled-related items pop up in 2024.
