Ah, July. When a young man’s thoughts turn from Dolly Parton doughnuts to Fourth of July doughnuts. And to that end, Krispy Kreme has just announced the red, white, and blue doughnuts that will grace the Star Spangled Sweetness Collection starting today, in stores everywhere. And they’ve got a cotton candy doughnut, my friends.

“From backyard barbeques with family, friends and neighbors to lined sidewalks at neighborhood parades, our Star Spangled Sweetness doughnuts make celebrating our Independence Day sweeter than ever,” said Dave Skena, Global Chief Brand Officer for Krispy Kreme, via a press release provided to Guilty Eats.

Per the three colors of the American flag, there are two new doughnuts to enjoy: Firework Cookies & Kreme; Cotton Candy Sparkler Doughnut; and a returning one, the Freedom Flag Doughnut.

The first one is essentially what it sounds like… An unglazed doughnut (because here in ‘murica we don’t need no frickin’ glaze!) filled with Cookies & Kreme, that’s been dipped in red icing, decorated with a swirl of blue icing, and there’s a little piece of rocket candy on there for the whole “rocket’s red glare” thing. You know the thing.

The Freedom Flag Doughnut, meanwhile, is an Original Glazed (the ‘murican way!) dipped in white icing, and then emblazoned with red stripes, as well as blue and gold sprinkles to make a de facto flag. Fun fact: I tried to eat an American flag once, and got – get this – arrested! Turns out you can’t do that! You can, however, eat these doughnuts. Legally.

I saved the best for last, though, the Cotton Candy Sparkler Doughnut. Once again this is an Original Glazed (‘murica!) dipped in blue icing, decorated with dabs of white and red buttercreme, and all covered with cotton candy sugar. Which, I don’t want to ruin anyone’s day here, is just sugar, but I digress.

Par usual, the doughnuts will be available in Krispy Kreme shops, or as a 6-count box at select retailers. And on July 4, if you wear red, white, and blue to participating Krispy Kreme shops, you’ll get a free Original Glazed Doughnut. I do not know whether “covered in the remains of a Star Spangled Sweetness Collection” counts as “wearing red white and blue,” but why not try it and find out! ‘murica!
