TRUFF Star Wars Dark Side Hot Sauce review: The Force is strong with this one
May The Fourth, aka the official Star Wars holiday, may be long over by now. We’re also far past Revenge of the Fifth (May 5), the follow-up holiday that celebrates the dark side of the Force. But as it turns out, there’s no wrong day to try the new TRUFF Star Wars Dark Side Hot Sauce.
The hot sauce actually hit a few weeks ago, in advance of Star Wars Day, and was a big hit online. Billed as TRUFF’s hottest sauce ever, according to the brand “the sauce intertwines the fiery essence of ghost peppers with the opulent notes of black winter truffles.”
TRUFF was nice enough to send Guilty Eats a package for review, and let me tell you: not only is this delicious, it’s a pretty incredible keepsake for Star Wars fans, as well.
In fact, the packaging is an essential part of the sauce, though it probably tastes way worse than the sauce itself. It comes in a large black box with fog steaming up from the bottom, a la when Darth Vader emerges from his chamber in the movies. The lettering is red, shiny, and raised; from the Star Wars logo to the Imperial crests stamped on the side.
When you open up the box, it feels like you’re pulling the sauce out of a Bacta tank, which is probably the point here… The bottle basically emerges from the box itself.
And the bottle is a beauty, too. Matte black, a real heft to it, and the cap is a carefully molded Darth Vader head. It’s the sort of thing that once you’re done with the sauce, you’ll absolutely want to wash out, stick back in the box and keep on your shelf.
The presentation is all well and good, but none of that would matter if the sauce wasn’t good, as well. Luckily it is good. Real good. While you might be scared away by the ghost pepper, and there is some real heat to this sauce, it’s not an overwhelming spice. The sting of the ghost pepper wakes up your tongue without destroying it, and the flavor comes out through the black winter truffles and sauce itself. In fact, it’s more sweet and tangy a la a barbecue sauce than what you might expect from pure hot sauce. It’s pretty much perfect for chips, to put on burgers and hot dogs, or to mix with the new Star Wars blue milk.
Actually that last one would probably be bad, don’t do that.
Despite it not being Star Wars Day, the TRUFF Star Wars Dark Side Hot Sauce is still available for $39.99. Which is a pretty steep price for hot sauce, but you’re getting the collectible too. And you know you want it. Join us. It is your destiny.
