Amazon Go heading to New York: The second checkout-free city in the U.S.
By Callum Gunn
Amazon Go made waves in Seattle. Now it’s time for the checkout-free store to come to New York. Would you trust technology to track what you buy?
Amazon Go is a Seattle-based checkout-free grocery story. After what seems to be a successful trial run and two extra stores, the company is now adding a new store in New York. At the moment, there’s no open date but this is big news for checkout-free grocery shopping.
When customers enter Amazon Go, they scan their phone. This has a credit card attached on file, which is then charged by Amazon for the purchases you make. All you do is walk around, pick up the stuff you want, and head straight back out. It really is that simple.

There are no checkouts to queue up at, no carts to mess around with, no card machines to hope are working properly. You shop and leave. Technology tracks everything you pick up and put back on the shelves, so your credit card is charged with the exact items you buy.
Awesome, right? It seems like plenty of people in Seattle have agreed, and that’s why New York is going to get the second Amazon Go store.

While there’s no word on when the store will open, Amazon is already on the search for members of staff. There’s not going to be as many as in a normal grocery store since there are no checkouts, but there will be a store manager, assistant manager, and training lead associate for the New York-based store.
Other jobs will include associates to prep ingredients, stock shelves, help customers, and make the food. Amazon Go grocery stores offer common staples, like bread, milk, and local chocolates (yes, definitely a staple), and provide meals on the go made by local chefs.
If you like the sound of this store, you’re in luck if you’re in San Francisco and Chicago, as they’re the next cities to get Amazon Go stores.
