With more vegan alternatives on the market, many donut fans are turning to the biggest American donut chains. Will Dunkin’ Donuts release the first vegan donut or will Krispy Kreme beat it to the post.
Vegan alternatives are on the rise. Whether it’s due to opinions on animal rights, dietary requirements, or just a taste preference, there are more vegan substitutes than ever before. Now donut fans are looking for Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme to bring out the first vegan donut.
Compassion Over Killing even put out a poll to its followers, asking which of the two biggest American donut chains would release the first vegan-friendly donut. What seems like initially an even playing field, it’s actually not.

Dunkin’ Donuts is the bigger of the two and could gain more by releasing the first vegan donut. It’s already offered a gluten-free brownie, so is making the initial steps in offering alternative choices.

On top of that, Dunkin’ Donuts has also ventured into plant-based drinks to serve the vegan community. It may not be a donut, but one step at a time, right? It’s more than Krispy Kreme has done so far, which is staying quiet on the whole topic for the time being.
Of course, silence doesn’t mean anything bad. The company could be secretly working on a vegan donut recipe. Sharing what you’re doing publically opens to competitors knowing the plans and looking to beat you. Krispy Kreme could have just decided to stay silent to avoid anyone finding out.
What can customers do for the time being? Make sure both Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme know that you want vegan donuts. The more they get requests, the more likely they are to bring something out in the near future.
