Deep dish pizza is a staple all throughout Chicago, but these spots do it best.
It’s no secret that Chicagoans love their pizza. From deep dish pizza to stuffed pizza, to ultra-thin crust pizza, the Windy City’s pizza culture is world renowned.
As a current resident of Chicago myself, I have the privilege of enjoying these various pies whenever I please. And believe me, I take full advantage of that privilege.

But before revealing my personal picks for deep dish, I’d first like to explain what a deep dish pizza is, as well as how it differs from stuffed, because hey; that’s what I’m here for, right?

For starters, deep dish pizza is made in a deep cast iron pan, hence the name deep dish. The cheese is then placed over the dough first, followed by toppings, sauce and in some cases, grated parmesan as a finish.
With stuffed, however; it is essentially the same process, but an extra layer of dough is placed over the bottom cheese and pressed against the sides of the initial layer of dough. It is then followed by another layering of cheese, then the toppings and sauce follow. That extra layer of dough is what makes it a stuffed pizza, and it’s why these pies tend to be heavier, cheesier and sometimes even messier.
So a place like Girodano’s Famous STUFFED pizza would fall directly under that above description. Are we all on the same page? Good!
Okay, now that we got that out of the way, let’s get to the good stuff.
