How to get groceries when your local store won’t deliver

Getting groceries delivered is easier said than done. With the increase in demand, if you can’t leave the house, getting what you need is quite difficult.

If you’ve tried to have groceries delivered to your house, you’ve likely had issues finding a time slot that wasn’t filled. With fewer people working at the grocery stores due to the coronavirus, but more people needing food delivered, figuring out when you can get your groceries delivered can seem next to impossible. Even places like Walmart, Instacart, and Amazon are having trouble finding people to deliver food to customers. The demand is that high.

And that doesn’t even take into account workers going on strike to gain better working conditions and better pay. Workers at Instacart, Amazon, and even Whole Foods employees have gone on strike in the past couple of weeks. Working to get people food in these difficult time is one thing, but doing it without the proper equipment and fair pay can be unbearable.

But there are ways to get your groceries without crossing the picket lines and without waiting for days. According to Vox, some local grocery stores are offering same-day delivery, but you have to check out your area to see if that option is available.

There are also several restaurants that have turned into grocery stores by selling meal kits, eggs, milk, and butter, and even toilet paper!

Eater New York reported that there are also options to order groceries in bulk if you’re willing to share them with your neighbors. You’ll want to check out your local wholesale food seller to see if they offer that option.

You also want to keep your ear to the ground for news about local organizations who are helping people get the groceries they need. There are a lot of places popping up to help people who can’t leave the house or can no longer afford groceries due to the loss of a job.

Volunteer groups in both New York and Los Angeles have both started to deliver groceries and other items to those in need. It’s amazing how generous people can be when their fellow humans need help in hard times.
