Google has released what recipes trended in 2020

Somehow, 2020 is almost over. To say this year was difficult would be an understatement and a half, but we made it. Part of the reason we made it is because of the internet connecting us to people we love and information (via Google) on how to make some of our favorite foods. With a lot of us home for hours on end (especially at the beginning of the pandemic), we needed something to do, and that something turned out to be baking.

To no one’s surprise, sourdough bread was the number one trending recipe in 2020 on Google. If you were on social media during the spring and summer, you saw someone either making a sourdough loaf or saw the final results (for better or for worse). It was everywhere. Sourdough was also the top trending search for bread as well (followed by cloud bread and beer bread).

The second trending recipe of 2020 was whipped coffee (also known as Dalgona coffee). With most coffee shops closed, people needed their caffeine fix and they wanted to make it just like their barista.

Whipped coffee, sourdough, and banana bread topped Google’s list of trending searches in 2020

It also didn’t hurt that whipped coffee went viral on TikTok and led to tons of people looking for recipes on how to make it. It’s basically coffee, hot water, and sugar mixed together until creamy and then finishing it off with a splash of milk. Very simple and this year, very popular.

The third and fourth trending recipe of 2020 will be a surprise to no one who missed out on their Disney vacation this year. People were desperately looking for recipes for Disney churros and Dole Whip, trying to get a taste of Disney without actually going there.

The fifth recipe also has to do with places we didn’t go to this year: hotels. There were lots of searches for the DoubleTree cookie. People rave about this chocolate chip cookie and since they couldn’t get it this year, they wanted to know how to make it at home. With how popular this Google search was, I clearly need to try this cookie!

This top ten list rounded out with Ikea meatballs, chaffles (egg and cheese mixed together and cooked in a waffle maker), hamburger buns, egg salad sandwiches, and of course, banana bread (but healthy).
