Guilty Eats: What inspired you to work with Old El Paso for this launch?

Ali Fedotowsky-Manno: “Oh my gosh. I was so pumped when Old El Paso told me about these tortilla pockets. The reason being, my husband does a lot of the grocery shopping so I’m usually not at the store looking up and down the aisles. So I hadn’t heard of them before. And we love taco night in my house. We absolutely love them. So the new Old El Paso Tortilla Pockets are a game changer for parents.

I don’t know if you know what it is, but it legit is like a pocket with a sealed bottom so that it contains all of the taco ingredients. You know when you go to take a bite of a taco, when it all falls out the other side we try to fold the other side to keep it all in but it still kind of comes out of your taco so your hands get all dirty. Or if you have a child, which I have two young kids (I have a four year old and a six year old), when we have taco night before the Old El Paso Tortilla Pockets, taco  fillings went everywhere. Just all over the floor and all over the table. My dog was very happy during those days because all the scraps fell to the floor. But having these now it is so great that they contain the fillings and contain the mess.

They also just make taco night so much more fun. My kids think they’re like a little ice cream cone, almost like a savory cone. They get to choose what fillings go inside. So this is actually a really great tip for parents that maybe struggle with picky eaters. I’ve noticed my son Riley is more of a picky eater. This really encourages him to eat and try new foods. So what I’ll do is I’ll chop up all the ingredients like the avocado, the lettuce, the black beans, the cheese and put it in little bowls on the table. Then I’ll let my son pick out the different ingredients and fill up his own tortilla pocket because by letting the kids be in charge, it makes them more likely to try new foods. Like if I were to fill up this and give it to my son with tomatoes in it and avocado and lettuce, he’d be like, get the green stuff out and you know, pulling it out. But if I give him the opportunity to do it himself, all of a sudden he’s like, oh, I want red in my tortilla pocket and I want green. I want all the colors. And then he wants to try it because he’s so proud of himself that he made it himself.

So not only does it contain the mess, but I also feel like it’s a really great opportunity to get your kids involved in making their own meals, putting together their own tortilla pocket and then getting more excited about trying new foods.”

GE: Do you have any other favorite Old El Paso products that you like to have to on the table?

AFM: “Oh, the taco seasoning! The taco seasoning is so good. Like we’re actually vegetarian in my house. We do a lot of beans but we do like soy chorizo too. And I love to put in the taco seasoning and that Old El Paso taco seasoning is so good. And then they also have a queso that you can just squirt in. I’ll heat it up or just squirt it right on top. They have a blanco queso and a regular queso. I love both of those too.”

GE: And of course because we are called Guilty Eats, I have to ask you do you have a guilty eat?

AFM: “Oh pasta. I eat pasta or pad thai, one or the other, every single day. I have to have my noodles. I make my own noodles sometimes. I make spaetzle. It’s a German noodle. It’s so easy to make actually.

When I was a kid, speaking of before school breakfast, I wish I had the tortilla pockets back then I probably would have eaten better, but I would just make pasta before school for breakfast. Like that was always my go to and even now, like a lot of days pasta is like my first meal of the day. So pasta is definitely my very guilty pleasure. And then when I want to eat better, I have taco night like tacos are my healthier, guilty pleasure. Pasta is my like, just carbs, not really much in there. And then tacos are my healthy guilty pleasure because if you really think about it, in ours at least we put in black beans, lettuce, maybe a little cheese, salsa, avocado and those are good foods. You know, I feel like it’s a great way to eat well so both of those.

Oh another guilty pleasure is like sweet tea ice cream. If you’ve never had sweet tea ice cream, I highly suggest finding some sweet tea ice cream for yourself. That’s another guilty pleasure of mine. It’s very good.”
