Popeyes Boneless Wings review: A glorified chicken nugget with decent flavor options
By Trey Weston
This summer, boneless wings have been a trendy topic in the food world. With both Wendy's and KFC dropping versions of their own-- and now Popeyes is the latest to join the mix. I headed to my local location over the weekend to give them a try, and I am happy to share my thoughts in this article.
If you didn't know already, the boneless wings or chicken nuggets (depending on how you view them) are available in locations nationwide. The new release features six different sauce flavors:
- Roasted Garlic Parmesan
- Signature Hot
- Honey BBQ
- Honey Lemon Pepper
- Sweet N' Spicy
- Classic
As for my visit, I considered every option besides classic -- because that is just a basic Popeyes nugget. And since my location wouldn't allow me to try three different flavors of two wings each in a six-piece, I elected to go with Honey Lemon Pepper and Sweet N' Spicy.
Beginning with the Honey Lemon Pepper -- it was a pretty tasty wing with the necessary crunch that a boneless wing should have. However, I felt the honey taste was too strong and the lemon pepper should have had more of an impact than it did.
Next, I tried the Sweet N' Spicy. This one was recommended to me by one of the workers, and it was decent. With a nice balance of both sweetness and spicy like the name says, it was a good flavor that went well with the delicious Popeyes breading.
All in all, if you are a boneless wings enthusiast like me, I would give it a try. Would I go back and order it again? Probably not. Will this be my new choice for boneless wings? No. But for the variety of flavors and the delicious Popeyes chicken to begin with, I believe you can't go wrong trying their new (or rebranded) option.
