TikTok kitchen hacks are everywhere, but do they actually work?

If you’re on TikTok, you’ve probably seen at least one video of someone demonstrating a new way to do something in the kitchen the rest of us have never thought of. Whether that be cutting a cake with dental floss or separating an egg with an empty water bottle, people are clearly using their time creatively to help others find new ways to do things in the kitchen.

But do any of them actually work? The internet doesn’t always tell the truth (shocking, I know!), so Delish decided to test them out for themselves to see if they were worth using in your kitchen. Here are the results!

More from Foodie News

One of the first hacks they tried out is to melt a Jolly Rancher with a hair straightener to make a sugar decoration for a cupcake. While this did work, the final result is less than ideal. It’d probably be better simply to melt a Jolly Rancher in a pan and then pour it out into whatever shape you want. Then you can control what it looks like a bit more.

The next hack was for draining pasta. According to this one, you’re supposed to put the strainer inside the pot with the pasta and water and then hold it in place while you pour the water out. Ok, let’s talk about why this isn’t the best idea.

Some TikTok kitchen hacks work while others are not worth the time and effort

First, you have to have a strainer that fits your pasta pot almost exactly. Next, you better be sure there isn’t so much water that it overflows when you put the strainer in. Be very careful when putting the strainer in the water.

Finally, and this is shown in the Delish video, since the pasta is staying in the hot pot instead of going into a cool strainer, it’s much more likely to stick to the bottom of the pot. They might have given this one a 7/10, but I’m saying…just do what you normally do to strain your pasta.

Trying And Rating 9 Of The Most Viral TikTok Food Hacks

We can’t believe how many of these TikTok food hacks actually WORKED! 🤯

The next hack is for jars you don’t have a lid for. According to the TikTok video, you can place a blown up balloon on a jar and slowly let the air out and it will seal it. WHAT?? Have we forgotten about aluminum foil and plastic wrap?? There are also silicone gadgets that will do the same job. And as shown by the people at Delish, it does not work.

Some of the other hacks include using the top of baby wipes to make a resealable opening in a bag of chips (I could not be rolling my eyes more), popping a popcorn kernel with a hair straightener (whyyy?), using a bottle to separate the yolk from the white, and using dental floss to slice a cake. Since I just wrote an article about this very thing, let’s talk about it.

In the video, it doesn’t seem to work and I think it’s because dental floss isn’t the sharpest thing ever and the person uses it on a double layer cake. A fishing line would work much better. It’s sharp enough to go through all the frosting and the cake. If you are  using dental floss, make sure it’s the waxed kind. It will be easier to slide through the cake.

One of the hacks that actually seemed to work was the lemon-juicing one. You stick a metal skewer into the lemon, remove it, and then squeeze. The result? A ton of juice comes out. It makes it much easier and you can still zest the lemon after which you can never do when you cut the lemon in half to juice it.

Clearly, as with most things on the internet, some of these TikTok hacks are worth checking out while the others it’s best to ignore.
