PETA has a problem with Peeps

Just Born, the manufacturer of Marshmallow Peeps, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Marshmallow Peeps, and now produces more than one billion individual Peeps per year. Last Easter, more than 700 million Marshmallow Peeps and Bunnies were consumed by men, women, and children throughout the United States. PETA’s new enemy are the marshmallow sweets, Peeps

Fans of Peeps just can’t seem to catch a break. Then again, it’s 2020, are any of us truly surprised bad news keep on coming?

Earlier this month, we learned that Just Born, the company behind Peeps, would not be making Halloween or holiday (Christmas) themed Peeps this year. Just Born made this tough decision because they believed the safety of their staff was more important and didn’t rush workers back to meet demand or begin working on new candy for the holiday season.

You have to respect this decision, so we completely get it and know that our favorite marshmallow sweets will come back with some amazing creations next year. But now, PETA has an issue with Just Born.

What does PETA have against Peeps?

According to Delish, actor James Cromwell,  on behalf of PETA, sent a letter to the CEO of Just born demanding that Peeps go vegan. Whether you agree with them or not, one thing you have to admire about PETA, is their passion and determination to help animals, but is this the right time?

How the candy not vegan? Well, the source explains that the key ingredient in the candy is gelatin obtained from pork skin and bones. Just Born explains that gelatin is needed to give the candy the texture fans love.

The source goes on the state that, for the moment, Just Born’s priority is to meet the “overwhelming demand for next Easter season,” which is when the candy is the most popular. In the meantime, vegans should stick to sweets that are vegan.

What do you think about PETA’s issue with Peeps? Is it valid during this time or are there other priorities we should be focusing on? Will you be missing Halloween Peeps?
