The late, great stand-up comic John Pinette one time did a routine about how he doesn’t understand why the McDonald’s line doesn’t move faster. The logic being that the menu has essentially been the same since you were a little kid, you know it backward and forward, why the sudden problem making a decision?

That is how ingrained McDonald’s has become in American culture. Even those who profess to only eat healthy and won’t eat anything that casts a shadow have probably at one time in their lives scarfed down a Big Mac and fries.

So when the folks at Mashed revealed what the most popular item on the McDonald’s menu is, the winner is obvious but also not that obvious due to the fact so many McDonald’s foods have become so iconic.

The Big Mac. The Egg McMuffin. The McRib. The late, lamented McDLT. The cookies. The so hot they will melt your tongue apple pies. Which one could be the most beloved out of a list of beloved foods?

The most popular McDonald’s item are the French Fries!

While all those sandwiches (and sweet treats) are amazing, according to most people they play second fiddle to the McDonald’s French Fries, which are actually considered a side dish. And if you have ever had McDonald’s French Fries, you probably agree one hundred percent.

The fries are so popular for two specific reasons. One, they are made with real potatoes despite what some people may think. And second, they add beef flavor to the cooking oil. It’s what gives the fries that extra something special that makes them so good.

We’ve all gone through the drive-thru and gotten nothing but an order of fries and a soda. They are that good. We’ve all reached into the bag on the way home and eaten some without telling anyone. Especially when they have cooled down just a bit but are still crisp and you can taste the salt and they snap every so slightly when you bite into them …

Sorry. Went off the rails there for a second.

McDonald’s French Fries have been a part of the chain’s menu literally since day one. The sandwiches may come and go and the restaurants themselves may get remodeled, but the fries have wonderfully remained the same.

Let’s all hope that never changes.
