McDonald’s Canada is getting new beef for its burgers
By Callum Gunn
If you’re a McDonald’s Canada burger fan, this news will be something you need to know. The beef is changing in a very good way.
Right now, McDonald’s Canada has Angus beef in its burgers. This really is the best type of beef, so why would the chain even consider switching?
The new beef for its burgers is changing but in a good way. You’ll still get Angus beef, but it’s going to be locally and ethically sourced. This seems to be the way that many fast food joints are moving, with A&W sourcing its Angus beef similarly for a while now.

However, McDonald’s Canada is going one step further than A&W. It’s going to be the first Canadian fast food company to get its beef from certified sustainable farms and ranches. The first step is with the beef, but this will continue with all other types of products in the store. So, while Subway may claim the burgers aren’t healthy for you, there’s no need to feel guilty for the way the cows are treated.

To be certified by the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB), farms need to be environmentally friendly. This means water can’t be wasted, the soil must remain healthy, and all animals’ health needs to be protected. The board also looks at the staff treatment, ensuring fair working conditions and farms helping each other.
Then there’s the meat itself. It all has to pass a number of tests to make sure it’s cleaned and good quality. The board has specific standards all cuts must meet.

And we can’t forget the need to sign up to a recycling program. Not only are the animals protected, but the CRSB wants to ensure the country is protected in the future.
For now, Alberta and Saskatchewan are the provinces the McDonald’s Canada beef will be bought from. This could expand later.
