How to make a perfect cup of coffee from the experts at Peet’s Coffee

MANAGUA, NICARAGUA - FEBRUARY 04: A barista shows a cup of coffee at De La Finca coffee house on February 04, 2021 in Managua, Nicaragua. Hurricanes Eta and Iota, which hit Nicaragua in last November, ruined much of the crops, especially green coffee beans. According to International Coffee Organization, 15% of the Nicaraguan soil used for coffee plantations was affected by landslides and floods produced by the tropical storms. As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was lower demand of workers for irrigation and fertilization processes and many specialized staff remained unemployed. Imports were also affected, increasing the price of fertilizers and other products needed to grow coffee. The coffee sector generates some 300,000 jobs at harvest time, so production is key for the country. Coffee is the third largest export good in Nicaragua, only surpassed by gold and beef. • Make sure you are checking the roast date of your beans when purchasing them in store. You want the freshest beans possible because it means every cup will be richer. It’s all about proper storing as well (something we discuss in the next tip). When it comes to getting a quality cup every time, you want to make sure that the time between roasting and brewing is as soon as possible for the freshest coffee experience. (When it comes to Peet’s Coffee, you can expect beans that have been roasted within the last 90 days when snagging a bag for at home brewing.)
  • Storage is important when it comes to continued freshness of coffee. No matter what coffee you choose, making sure it is properly stored in a good container is the key to a delicious brew at home. Make sure you are looking for an airtight container, and at Peet’s they recommend their Airscape Canister which is 32 ounces of beany goodness.
  • Finally, it is important not to let your coffee sit out for too long, especially once it has been brewed. In fact, the Peet’s experts recommend not drinking coffee that has been sitting out for more than four hours. At the same time, if your cup has been sitting, make sure to reheat so that it gets back up to 165 degrees or more before consuming. That being said, the experts say to drink your coffee within 30 minutes of brewing for a perfect cup every time because the longer it sits, the more sour notes that develop.

When it comes to enjoying a cup of coffee at home, you want it to be fresh. And paying attention to the beans, the roast, and the way you store everything is the key to making sure you are getting a perfect cup with every pot.
